Michael Whatly   Michael Whatley
Principal

Michael Whatley qualified in 1971 and has had a wealth of experience in most aspects of the law.  Michael served his articles in the city; in 1975, he started his own practice and moved from London to Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket in 1990.  His legal expertise extends to conveyancing, reversionary interest, buying and selling of licensed premises, general debt recovery and contractual disputes.

Michael is also a Duty Solicitor and an advocate in the Magistrate’s Courts and occasionally in the Crown and County Courts.  As well as dealing with Conveyancing, he also leads the Criminal Defence Team dealing with the majority of matters dealt with in the Magistrates' Court and high profile cases in the Crown Court.

His personal interests include most aspects of country life including riding, hunting, successful racehorse ownership, golf, tennis, squash.  He is married with three children.

Julia Gooch
Head of Criminal Department

Julia Gooch is a Legal Executive and specialises in criminal defence work.  She has been with the firm for thirteen years and prior to that worked for solicitors’ firms in St. Neots and Cambridge; giving her over twenty years experience.

Julia is an accredited Police Station representative.  This means that she is authorised to attend at Police Stations anywhere in East Anglia to advise and assist individuals arrested for offences or those who have been asked to attend at Police Stations voluntarily for an interview.

In addition, Julia is involved in the preparation of cases in the Magistrate’s Court and the Crown Court throughout East Anglia. Julia has been involved in a variety of cases from minor road traffic offences through to rapes and murders.

Julia works closely with the Principal, Michael Whatley, heading up the criminal department assisted by Tish Whatley, the personal assistant to the criminal department.

In her spare time, Julia has been attending at the West Suffolk College for a bricklaying course.  Having successfully passed her City & Guilds qualification, she is now working towards an NVQ2 / Independent Construction Award.  In addition, she enjoys keeping fit, sewing and cooking.

Alan England

Alan has many years experience in general High Street practice and now deals with both commercial and residential property transactions along with general private client work and heads up the conveyancing team.

When not involved in the firms business, Alan enjoys long walks with his dogs and, whenever he can, warm water scuba diving.

Currently a trainee solicitor who is due to qualify in August 2008.

Michelle currently works in Conveyancing and Probate and hopes to specialise in these areas once she has qualified.  Michelle has an administrative and accounting background and moved into law in her mid 20’s.
